Biography – Philip Lang

Born October 3, 1958 / Altoona, Pennsylvania

Philip Lang lives in Elverson, Pennsylvania and began painting in the watercolor medium while living on the central coast of California.  After relocating to his home state of Pennsylvania in 1993, he continued to paint in watercolor, and has added pastel and most recently oil painting to his repertoire.  The inspiration for his art comes from nature and the unique personality of the Chester County landscape and surrounding area.  His fascination with compositional aspects of design has prompted him to paint in the abstract style as well.  Philip especially enjoys plein air landscape painting.

Primarily a self-taught artist, Lang has studied with the following mentors:  Gerald Merfeld (apprentice to American illustrator Dean Cornwall), Susan Sarback (Founder of the School of Light and Color in Fair Oaks, California) and the late Arthur Renshaw (schooled in post WWII New York).

Philip Lang has been featured the book, 100 Artists of the Brandywine Valley Catherine Quillman, (Schiffer Publishing)
